Driving Heritage and Ecotourism opportunities for Bendigo Region
Story by Bendigo Council | Added 12-10-2014 | Source | Leave a Comment
The potential of the Bendigo Region to attract heritage and ecotourism visitors has been further recognised.
Bendigo Regional Tourism Board has welcomed the recently released report from the Inquiry into Heritage Tourism and Ecotourism in Victoria by the state’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

The Committee concludes that “ecotourism and heritage tourism have enormous potential for sustainable growth in Victoria” and that “Victoria should be a national leader in ecotourism and heritage tourism”.

The Report makes a number of recommendations that relate to the Bendigo and wider Goldfields region, in particular pushing for the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park to pursue UNESCO World Heritage Listing and recommending that Regional Tourism Boards receive greater state funding and play a greater role in driving tourism growth in their regions.
Bendigo Regional Tourism Chair Cr Paula Nixon said that the region has always been a magnet for visitors interested in heritage and increasingly, a destination for outdoor recreation for cyclists and walkers.

“With our strength in these two visitor segments, we support the Committee’s recommendations to strengthen the industry and increase our ability to attract Melbourne, interstate and international visitors.

“Visitors love the contrast of the historic backdrops mixed with contemporary experiences that are increasingly on offer in our region,” she said.

The state government now has six months to consider and respond to the Committee’s recommendations.
