Scottish eyes on golden Bendigo

Scottish eyes will be on Bendigo next month when Scotland’s tourism chief visits for the city’s annual Scots Day Out in Rosalind Park

VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay will join Greater Bendigo City Council Mayor, Cr Rod Fyffe, in taking the salute from bands and clans as they parade down View St into Rosalind Park on Saturday 13 February.

Mr Cantlay, who will be in Australia for performances of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, has chosen Bendigo as the venue to meet with representatives of Scottish groups from across the nation at the start of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

“I have heard Scots Day Out is a wonderful community celebration of our traditional and contemporary culture. It will be a fantastic opportunity for us to engage with Scottish diaspora and encourage visits home during YIAD,” Dr Cantlay said.

“We will also celebrate the success of sportsmen and women from the central Victorian region at our Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last year, discover more of the links between Bendigo and Scotland that go back many years and hopefully learn a few of the secrets behind Bendigo’s fine reputation as a tourism leader in Australia.”
Mr Cantlay and Cr Fyffe will host a special luncheon for Bendigo and Scottish community leaders at the art gallery during the visit.

Cr Fyffe said: “The visit by Mike Cantlay and the VisitScotland team will be greeted by the symbolism and colour of our wonderful new official Bendigo Tartan.

“Since the discovery of gold, Scots have more than played their part in Bendigo’s journey to the cosmopolitan 21st century regional city we are today and council looks forward to exploring possible new links with Scotland in education and innovation, sport, creative industries and culture,” Cr Fyffe said.

SDO director Chris Earl said: “For three years, SDO has brought together the Bendigo community and showcased our city to visitors from around Australia. Golden City Pipe Band and our team of SDO volunteers are stoked that we will be sharing the smiles of SDO with Scotland in 2016.”
