Legacy Way tunnel: 314 speeding fines in first week

Hundreds of Queenslanders have paid far more than expected for their trip through Legacy Way, with 314 speeding fines issued in the tunnel's first week of operation.

Police are telling drivers to slow down in light of the figures, warning the $1.5 billion toll road's three fixed speed cameras in each direction could fine the same driver several times in one trip.

Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said while speeding was always dangerous, it was "particularly alarming" to see it in the tunnel.

"It is particularly important that drivers obey all signage in the tunnel including the speed limits to ensure the traffic management plans work effectively to maintain a safe environment for all drivers," he said.

"Every time you exceed the speed limit you are increasing the risk of you, your passengers and other road users of being involved in a traffic crash which could result in serious injury or death.

"There is ample amount of speed limit signage throughout the tunnel and we are warning drivers to stick to the posted speed limit or face the real likelihood of receiving a fine in the mail."

The number of fines is slightly higher than those issued in an average week for drivers using both the Clem7 and Airportlink tunnels.

More than 16,000 fines were issued from the Airportlink (about 310 per week) and more than 14,000 (about 270 per week) in the 2014-15 financial year, according to News Corp figures.

The Legacy Way Tunnel opened on June 25 after more than four years of construction.
