Kind act warms Stretch’s heart as Konteljs head to the UK |
YEARS of community service paid off for departing Geelong councillor Stretch Kontelj on Friday when a wallet containing his identification, credit cards and a large amount of cash was found on the road and handed in to the Corio police station.
The man who found the wallet in Bell Parade, Drumcondra, saw that it belonged to Dr Kontelj, who he knew to be a former Geelong councillor and had heard was leaving the country.
He took the wallet first to the Member for Lara, John Eren’s, office and then to the police station as he knew Dr Kontelj would be panicking.
Dr Kontelj is set to fly out of Australia to start a new job and life in the United Kingdom on Saturday.
He lost his wallet after a photo shoot with the Geelong Advertiser.
“I had put the wallet on the roof of the car and then driven off. It flew off in Drumcondra,” Dr Kontelj said.
“I was absolutely beside myself when I couldn’t find it (at the end of my journey). How could I get on a plane without identification or a credit card or anything?”
The leather wallet contained $1300 in cash, all of which was returned, he said.
“This gentleman is absolute gold,” Dr Kontelj said. “It just restores your faith in people and shows the decency of people in this town, It also shows that we tend to know each other and want to help each other.
“This man went to great lengths to return my wallet in the shortest possible time, knowing that I was leaving and would be desperate. I think it’s just remarkable.”
