Akon Guode, accused of murdering her three children, to be held in protective custody |
A MOTHER charged with the drowning murder of three of her children will be held in protective custody, a court has heard.
Akon Guode, 36, is accused of killing three of her children by driving them into a Wyndham Vale lake.
One girl, six-year-old Aluel, survived the tragedy.
Ms Guode, 36, appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court this afternoon charged with the murder of four-year-old twins Madit and Hanger and one-year-old Bol.
She is also charged with the attempted murder of Aluel.
Her lawyer told the court Ms Guode would need to be held in protective custody because of the enormity of the allegations against her.
“As a loving mother she is devastated at what has happened,” he said.
The father of the children and her eldest daughter were among a crowd of about a dozen members of Melbourne’s south Sudanese community in court for her brief appearance.
Police allege Ms Guode drove the family’s Toyota Kluger into Lake Gladman, in Wyndham Vale, on April 8.
Ms Guode was charged today following a four-month investigation by homicide squad detectives. The court heard police would prepare a brief of evidence by October 27.
Evidence would include CCTV footage.
Ms Guode was remanded in custody to reappear in court for a committal mention on December 8.
The court heard Ms Guode would need “professional support” in respect of her incarceration.
She did not make an application for bail.
