Police car crashes in front of police station |
A POLICE car was involved in a two-car crash in front of the Bendigo police station on Wednesday afternoon – the same car that was rammed at Crusoe Reservoir in September.
Sergeant Mick McCrann was attempting to cross High Street on Thistle Street at 3pm on the way to an urgent job in a white unmarked police car when a car travelling north on High Street collided with him.
The police car was crossing against a red light at the time with lights and sirens activated, and had successfully crossed three of the four lanes on High Street.
The other car involved was travelling at the speed limit before the crash.
There were no serious injuries from the crash and both cars were towed from the scene.
Sergeant McCrann, who was also rammed in the same car at Crusoe Reservoir in September, suffered bruised ribs.
The female driver of the other car had a minor leg injury but required no further treatment.
Officer in charge of Bendigo Highway Patrol, Senior Sergeant Mark Edwards, said it was a “very unfortunate incident” and it appeared no parties were to blame.
"It appears she hasn’t seen or heard the police vehicle,” he said.
“She was in the far left lane and vehicles in the other lanes had all stopped, which would have obstructed her view.
“It’s not that anyone hasn’t exercised due care. Sergeant McCrann entered the intersection very very slowly and was properly conducting urgent duty driving.”
Footage of the crash will be examined by Victoria Police.
The police car was not written off and is likely to return to the Bendigo Highway Patrol fleet.
Senior Sergeant Edwards said it was unfortunate the same car and same officer were involved in two crashes in the space of a few months.
“Maybe that car just carries bad luck with it,” he said
