Woman charged with operating home brothel in East Bendigo |
DETECTIVES say an illegal brothel operating from an East Bendigo home is believed to be unrelated to any broader sex network.
The brothel was shut down after a police raid on Wednesday.
A 40-year-old woman was arrested at the address.
She was charged with a number of offences, including operating as a sex worker without a license.
The woman was allegedly operating the illegal brothel from her home and was the sole business owner and operator.
Detective Sergeant Colin Grenfell said complaints from neighbours led to the initial police investigation.
He said the brothel was an established business that had been operating for a number of months.
But he said there were no clear links to an illegal brothel in Galvin Street, Bendigo, that was raided last year.
“We believe this was an isolated operation,” he said.
“We received a number of complaints from residents in the area and investigated.
“These type of illegal operations come up every now and then.”
Detective Grenfell said the investigation was continuing with more people being spoken to.
He said there were serious indictable offences involved with sex work offences.
He warned police were quick to swoop on any illegally run brothels.
The charge of operating an illegal brothel carries a maximum jail term of five years.
The 40-year-old woman is set to face court at a later date.
