| White ribbons show support for cause |
MORE THAN 800 people marched in solidarity against family and domestic violence in Bendigo on Wednesday
The day marked White Ribbon Day, with school students, the army, emergency services and community groups all participating in the march.
Federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters took the time in Federal Parliament to acknowledge victims of family violence.
“Most of all I acknowledge the women who have stood up and spoken out, who have ensured none of us forget the trauma they have faced,” she said.
Local community leaders and sporting identities spoke out against family violence on Wednesday, calling for an end to victim blaming and inequality.
White Ribbon’s mission is making women’s safety a man’s issue too.
The prevention work of White Ribbon takes place in schools, workplaces and across the wider community.
Chair of White Ribbon Australia John Rosewarne said the group applauds communities across Australia who united on Wednesday in support of bringing an end to men’s violence against women.
“It is everyone’s responsibility to make this happen,” he said.
“We need ongoing action among our schools, workplaces, sporting clubs and politicians if we are to become a society committed to respect, stopping the violence and delivering true
gender equality.”
Mr Rosewarne said all women should live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence.
“Sadly, this is not the case. On average, more than one woman per week is killed by a current or former partner,”
he said.
