Whipstick Ward Councillor Peter Cox is Mayor elect of the City of Greater Bendigo
The Mayor elect process was conducted by Councillors at a meeting last night in accordance with the Council Local Law.
Cr Cox is expected to be officially elected at a ceremony at the Town Hall on November 11. Cr Barry Lyons remains Mayor until then.
“It is an enormous privilege to be elected to this position by my fellow Councillors and I look forward to us working together to deliver great outcomes for our community over the next 12 months,” Cr Cox said.
“Together we aspire to be Australia’s most liveable regional city and the decisions we make over the next year will help to shape our success in this regard.
“Top priorities for the next 12 months include implementing the Residential Development Strategy and finalising the Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy.”
About Cr Cox
Cr Peter Cox has been a Councillor with the City of Greater Bendigo since 2008. In 2012, he was one of three Councillors elected to represent Whipstick Ward until 2016.
Cr Cox lives in California Gully and has worked for Future Employment Opportunities for 25 years. He was instrumental in establishing the Eaglehawk Enterprise Park, now known as Workplace Eaglehawk, and the Eaglehawk Recycle Shop. He has a tertiary qualification in Community Development and is a trained mediator and facilitator.
Cr Cox also served as a Councillor with the former City of Hawthorn during the 1970s and has worked with young people to pioneer changes to legislation to reduce road deaths. In 2005 he was named Social Ventures Australia’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year and in 2008 received the Eaglehawk Community Service Award. In 2013 Cr Cox received Rotary’s highest individual Award, the Paul Harris Fellow.
