Victorian Parliament strikes gold......replica |
The Member for Bendigo East, joined with the Mayor of the Loddon Shire, Geoff Curnow, at the unveiling of the replica of the world's largest gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger' in its new home at the Victorian Parliament.
During the regional sittings of the Victorian Parliament in Bendigo and Ballarat in September last year, Gold was adopted as the Mineral Emblem of the State of Victoria.
In recognition of this, the Prospectors and Miners Association of Victoria presented the Victorian Parliament with a replica of the Welcome Stranger nugget.
"The Welcome Stranger is the world's largest gold nugget and was found in 1869 near Moliagul.
It's discovery came during the heady days of the gold rush that attracted tens of thousands of people to the goldfields of Central Goldfields and supported the establishment of Bendigo and Ballarat as vibrant regional centres."
"Visitors to Parliament will have the opportunity to size up the Welcome Stranger and marvel at its size and the significance of its find," Ms Allan said.
