Mayor's Christmas message
Story by | Added 24-12-2015 | Source | Leave a Comment

I wish all City of Greater Bendigo residents a very Merry Christmas and send my best wishes for 2016.

I hope you will have the opportunity to join with family and friends over the festive season. Whether you are travelling near or far, please stay safe.

This is a time to relax, reflect on the year that has been and look ahead to what may come. Perhaps you can also welcome someone into your home that otherwise won’t have people to share this time with.

This year Greater Bendigo again celebrated a string of great achievements.

The Ulumbarra Theatre opened to rave reviews and was deemed a remarkable building that gave new life to an historic gem.

Funding for major projects such as the Greater Bendigo Indoor Aquatic Leisure and Wellbeing Centre, the Bendigo Airport redevelopment and Bendigo Stadium expansion was secured. When complete, these works will help enhance our overall liveability and further bolster our region’s economic capabilities.

Our commitment to creating a more sustainable future for Greater Bendigo was enhanced following the rollout of the trial of an organics waste service. Similarly, our Integrated Transport and Land Use Strategy was launched and encourages residents to change their mode of transport one day in five. If we can do this, it will reduce congestion on our roads
To help us keep active, the redeveloped Canterbury Park opened, along with the extension of the O’Keefe Rail Trail. Don’t forget there are also plenty of parks and lakes where you can go to get some fresh air and take a walk.

Our highly valued services also continued. Customer Support staff took approximately 95,000 phone calls, more than 13,000 children were immunised, 112 community events were supported, more than 1,800 young people attended a range of FReeZA events.

88.7km of road was resealed and 20km of kerb and channel was constructed.

We have not been without our challenges this year and I hope there will be a greater respect for our differences in the New Year.

To be named as Mayor for 2015/2016 was a great honour and I look to forward leading the community again. There is so much to look forward to.
