A TRUCK driver is lucky to be alive after his tip tray hit a powerline and 22,000 volts surged through the vehicle in Corio.

The accident on Bacchus Marsh Rd — near the Geelong Ring Road Employment Precinct — caused three of the truck’s tyres to blow and left holes in the earth.

It also wiped out power to large parts of Corio and Norlane and caused traffic lights in the area to stop functioning.

CYCLIST SURVIVES AFTER RIDING INTO POWERLINE

Corio CFA senior station officer Steve Alcock said the truck was unloading gravel for planned roadworks in the area when “the tipper” clipped a 22,000-volt powerline on Saturday morning.
Mr Alcock said it appeared the truck driver had escaped injury.

“You don’t get much higher than 22,000 volts. He’s extremely lucky,” Mr Alcott said.

A Powercor spokesman said the powerline which was hit by the truck tip tray was a ‘feeder line’ to much of Corio and 2038 households had lost power from 8.45am.

Power had been restored to all homes by 2.14pm, with many restored earlier, he said.

He urged all people to remember to “look up and live” because accidentally hitting powerlines could kill.
