Germanwings pilot's moving reassurance to passengers goes viral |
A pilot has gone beyond the call of duty to allay the fears of passengers on a Germanwings flight just a day after a co-pilot deliberately crashed one of the airline's planes, killing all 150 people on board.
According to passenger Britta Englisch, whose Facebook post about the pilot's actions has gone viral, captain Frank Woiten personally welcomed each passenger aboard the 8:40am Hamburg to Cologne flight, by name.
Mr Woiten then delivered the customary captain's announcement from inside the cabin, rather than via the plane's PA system, during which he empathised with the passengers and shared some of his own mixed feelings about the flight.
According to Ms Englisch, the cabin was completely silent after Mr Woiten finished his speech, in which he assured the passengers that he and each crew member would do everything they could to ensure the safety of all on board.
According to Ms Englisch's post, the captain spoke "about how he and the crew had been affected by the tragedy.
"About how the crew feel strange as well, but all of them were there voluntarily.
"And about how he has a family too, the crew have families too, and that he will do anything to make sure he will arrive back with them in the evening."
"It was completely quiet," Ms Englisch wrote.
"And then the whole plane applauded."
The world continues to reel from the tragic crash in the French Alps, as further evidence of the instability of co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, who deliberately crashed the plane into the French Alps, comes to light.
Investigators have confirmed that Lubitz suffered from a serious illness, and have found a torn-up sick note in his home, suggesting that he should not have been at work on the day of the crash.
