Bystanders lift car off trapped NSW woman |
Bystanders have helped free a mother trapped under a car that knocked her and her baby to the ground before crashing into a Newcastle cafe.
The car reversed into a parked taxi before mounting a footpath, knocking over the woman and her six-month-old baby before smashing into the Perkins Street cafe after midday on Friday, police say.
Witness Bennett Joy told Fairfax media a man presumed to be the woman's partner called for help.
"You couldn't see (the mother) at all and the father was screaming 'that's my baby, that's my wife'," Mr Joy told Fairfax media on Friday.
"Someone said get a (car) jack and someone else just said let's lift it'. We all just got together and lifted it to get her out."
The woman, believed to be in her 20s, was treated at the scene for head and leg injuries.
The mother and baby have been taken to John Hunter Hospital with serious injuries.
A fifth person was also taken to hospital, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told AAP.
The driver of the car and the taxi were both uninjured but have been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
